Mr Shabbir Mohamed is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon based at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation trust since 2007.
He graduated with honours from Manchester Medical School in 1996 and has always been interested in the treatment of patients with ophthalmic disease. He has trained in general ophthalmology at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre as well as many of the ophthalmic units in the West Midlands.
In addition, he has undertaken further advanced training in glaucoma as well as corneal and external disease management. Shabbir manages patients with general ophthalmic problems including performing cataract surgery. His main sub-specialist interests are the medical, laser and surgical management of patients with glaucoma and the management of patients with ocular surface disease including red, sore eyes. Since his appointment as a consultant, he has developed innovative ways of delivering care for the benefit of his patients. These include the successful establishment of a community ophthalmic clinic at the Sutton Medical Consulting Centre and the development of the complex glaucoma service at University Hospital Birmingham.
In addition, he has refined the assessment of patients with suspected glaucoma by using the latest available research in developing a high level efficient clinical service. He prospectively audits his surgical service to ensure that standards are maintained. He also participates in regular patient satisfaction surveys which reveal that the service developments are well received by patients.
His research interests are in developing new treatments for patients with glaucoma, looking at service delivery models to optimise outcomes for patients and looking at the ocular surface impact of ophthalmic medications. Shabbir is driven by delivering a quality service to his patients. Shabbir’s philosophy is that caring for patients to try to ease suffering is a great privilege.
